Dr Rob Buist

Specialty: Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Sub Specialty: High Risk Obstetrics

Dr Rob Buist graduated from The University of Auckland School of Medicine and underwent his postgraduate training in New Zealand and the UK. He is a Fellow of The Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a Fellow of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London). Rob has been a Specialist now for over twenty years (the time has just flown)! Rob has held senior clinical leadership roles at National Women's Hospital in Auckland and The Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick before selling out the public system and becoming a private obstetrician. Rob has long had an interest in examining - and improving - the outcomes of maternity care and he is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW. Despite being an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Rob now focusses entirely on Obstetrics. While he is perfectly happy caring for women experiencing normal pregnancies and births his particular interest is complex obstetrics. Rob's expertise relates to caring for women with previous reproductive or obstetric problems and those who have significant medical conditions that may affect their pregnancies. Indeed Rob now restricts his practice to three groups of patients:

  1. Women he has cared for in the past
  2. Women referred by the GPs or Specialists that have supported his practice over the years
  3. Women with previous reproductive problems or high risk medical conditions

Dr Sarah Clements

Specialty: Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Sub-specialty:Maternal Fetal Medicine

My name is Sarah Clements and I’m an Obstetrician working at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital. I received a first class Honour’s Degree as part of my Medical Training and chose to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology early in my career. Initially I trained in London before transferring to The Royal Hospital for Women to complete my training with the Australian and New Zealand College. When I obtained my Fellowship I chose to concentrate on looking after women through pregnancy and delivering their babies (Obstetrics). I have always found this the most exciting and fulfilling part of the specialty and therefore I no longer practice as a gynaecologist. Although most pregnancies and births go well there are times when Obstetrics can be more complicated and more skills are required. I wanted to gain these skills so spent 3 extra years training in Maternal Foetal Medicine (MFM). MFM is the branch of Obstetrics which deals with high risk pregnancies when either the mother or the baby inside the womb, have complications. With these skills I can help make women’s pregnancies as safe as possible. I have been working in the field of Obstetrics for more than 20 years and still find delivering babies as rewarding as when I started. Giving birth to my 3 children remains the most important life event for me. Every woman’s pregnancy and birth are different and one of the privileges of being an obstetrician is helping women plan their journey. I offer individualised care, recognising that birth is a unique event for each woman. I only book a small number of private patients each month so I can maintain this individualised approach.

Dr Wendy Hawke

Specialty: Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Dr Hawke is an Obstetrician Gynaecologist working at Prince of Wales Private Hospital (POWPH) and The Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) in Randwick, Sydney. She is experienced in managing both straightforward and complicated pregnancies, and general office gynaecology. She ‘job shares’ her private obstetric practice with her partner Dr Stephen Coogan, also an Obstetrician Gynaecologist. A native New Zealander, Dr Hawke completed her medical degree in 1991 before moving to Sydney in 1994 to undertake specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RHW, initially when the hospital was located in Paddington, and in later years at Randwick. She, with Dr Coogan, completed her final 2 years of training in Salisbury and Portsmouth, UK in 2000 and 2001 before returning to Sydney in 2002 to set up private practice together. Her practice is predominantly obstetric, delivering private patients at both POWPH and RHW. Having admitting rights at both POWPH and RHW allows her to care for women throughout their pregnancy, as sometimes problems develop which are not able to be managed at POWPH but can be through RHW, a tertiary obstetric hospital. Dr Hawke encourages and supports normal birth as much as possible, but, has the skill base to care for all complications arising in pregnancy, and has many colleagues locally to refer to and involve in pregnancy care if any further advice or management is needed. Her private practice offices are within the hospital complex, and she lives in Randwick, so has timely access to deliveries when needed. She offers office gynaecology services through her private practice as has sound general gynaecological skills, but, again has a wealth of colleagues she can refer to if any advice or management is needed outside of her skill set.
